Our Top Rated Wines in the 2027 Halliday Wine Companion
2022 Icon Eden Valley Shiraz - 96+ pts
Shiraz from the Pendee Farm Eden Valley vineyard. Average vine age 85 years; 24 months' maturation in 100% new French oak. Deep magenta crimson with a wave of glossy blackberry, blueberry and satsuma plum fruit. The oak isn't shy here, with cedar, vanilla pod and nutty tones floating over the fruit. Hints of baking spices, dark chocolate, blackforest cake, dried tobacco, polished leather, licorice, pan juices and violets. Full bodied with plenty of pure fruit and latent power, tannins toothsome and fine, the flavours stretching out full-length on the finish.
2024 Icon Cabernet Shiraz - 96 pts
A 60/40 blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz from the Pendee Farm vineyard in the Eden Valley; 30% whole bunch in the shiraz. Deep crimson with a swell of pure blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry and damson plum fruits. Hints of baking spices, nutty oak, cedar, licorice, bay leaf, crushed herbs, roast meats, brandied fruits and earth. Plush, elegant and sporting a swift mineral line, gloriously pure fruit and some lovely sapidity on the lingering finish. Phoo-wee!
2024 The Peacekeeper Grenache - 95+ pts* Special value for money
I've enjoyed recent releases of this wine, so I've been looking forward to seeing it from the strong '24 vintage. 40% whole bunch from the Theile Rd, Bethany, Pendee Farm and Springton vineyards. Perfumed and smelling very nice indeed with bright ginger-flecked ripe plum, cranberry and raspberry fruits cut with hints of souk-like spice, dried citrus rind, orange blossom, cola and earth. Those characters transpose neatly over to the palate. Still perfumed with spice and floral facets, with gentle, silty tannins, just the right amount of chew and a finish that draws out wonderfully.
2024 Fist Fight Barossa Shiraz - 95 pts* Special value for money
A blend of Barossa and Eden Valley shiraz sourced from the Pendee Farm, Springton and Stonewell Cottages vineyards; matured in 20% new French oak puncheons for 15 months. Deep crimson with appealing characters of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry fruits with hints of brown spice, dark chocolate, cedar, tobacco leaf, espresso, violets, pan juices and earth. Full bodied, luscious and fruit pure, with superfine, powdery tannins and a bright pastille tang to the black fruits on the fade out.
2024 Single Vineyard Grenache - 95 pts
A lovely, fragrant grenache sourced from 90-year-old vines at Pendee Farm in Springton; 50% whole bunch and matured for 15 months in seasoned French oak foudre. Mid-magenta/crimson in the glass with lifted aromas of juicy satsuma plum, blueberry and cranberry fruits with hints of spice, gingerbread, citrus blossom, musk sticks, dried citrus rind, amaro and raspberry drops. Plenty of space and detail on the palate in addition to a wicked distant murmur of Turkish delight. Jeez it's a lovely drink; mid-weighted with fine, pillowy tannins and a bright sour cherry line. Bravo.
2023 Single Vineyard Old Vine Syrah - 95 pts
Syrah sourced from the 90-year-old vines of Pendee Farm at Springton; 30% whole bunch, matured for 18 months in new and seasoned French oak foudre. Deep magenta/crimson with fruit tones of blackberry, doris plum and black cherry fruits with underlying hints of brown spice, sage, dark chocolate, graphite, violets, pan juices and olive tapenade. It's a supple, velvety wine with abundant spice and a coal-dust depth. This has powdery crushed-rock tannins and a lovely long draw of flavour on the finish.
2025 Nothing In Common Riesling - 95 pts
Pale and flecked with green flashes in the glass with commanding aromas of freshly squeezed lime, grapefruit, lemon and green apple. Hints of lime zest, lemongrass, lime sorbet, makrut lime, citrus blossom and Christmas lily. Sleek and finely focused, the pristine limey fruits slide frictionless on rails of porcelain acidity, finishing dry, thirst-slaking and demanding of an immediate refill. Great vivid drinking!
2023 Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz - 94 pts
Sourced from the 80-year-old shiraz vines off the Hobbs vineyard in Bethany; 20% whole-bunch matured for 18 months in 50/50 new and seasoned French oak. It's a deeply coloured wine with thick-shouldered blackberry, black cherry and plum conserve fruit notes on a bed of baking spices, aniseed, cedar, olive tapenade, fruit-and-nut chocolate and blackforest cake. As for style, it spans the gap between classic and contemporary, with pure black fruit, nicely judged oak, fine, silty tannins and a decent stretch of flavour on the back end.
